The City of Baldwin Park was named the nation’s third-cleanest community for 2017 by the organization American Council for Clean Air and Environmental Education. The organization, which is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, said the city is a member of its Clean Communities Network and is a member of its AirSmart Network.

The City of Baldwin Park was recognized by the organization Environmental Leadership &, Management in January 2018 for being one of the top 50 cleanest communities in the nation.

During a City Council meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 3, City Manager Greg Pottorff announced that the Baldwin Park Dog Park is closing because the City is planning to tear down the existing structure.

"After reviewing various options, the City of Baldwin Park is looking to demolish the current dog park and replace it with a new, ADA-compliant park," Pottorff said in a press release. "All dog park users will be required to utilize the new park when it is completed."

During Wednesday’s meeting, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution approving the design of the new park.

“I am looking forward to the future of this park,” said Mayor Pro Tem David Davenport.

The Baldwin Park Dog Park is located on the northwest corner of A and 17th streets.

There are currently 15 dog owners living in the community, however, the number is expected to rise once a housing development project is complete.

The City Council said the existing dog park was constructed in 2016, prior to a residential development project that began in late 2017.

If the council approves an ordinance that authorizes the demolition of the current dog park and construction of the new one, which will also include a park trail, landscaping and public safety facilities, construction is expected to begin in Spring of 2020.

"We look forward to working with you, the community and the dog park users to make this new park as fun, safe and exciting as the existing park," said Pottorff.

The City Council voted to move forward with approval of the park design in September.

The design of the new park, which will have a fenced perimeter, will include a drinking fountain, seating area, dog washing station, playground area and bathroom.

Baldwin residents will be able to apply to use the new park when it opens in Spring of 2020.

Baldwin City Council meets on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the Civic Auditorium at 101 N. 14th St.
