Diet for dogs with pancreatitis

Inflammation of the pancreas often leads to permanent dysfunction of the organ. Your dog's diet usually has to be changed over the long term because sick four-legged friends can no longer use their food without problems. The pancreas is an important part of the digestive tract. It secretes juices that contain enzymes that break down food into its smallest components. If this no longer works properly, nutrients cannot be used. The body can then no longer meet its need for vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. The disease is often chronic, which is why dogs with pancreatitis usually need special nutrition.

Easily digestible food for dogs with pancreatitis

Sick dogs are put on a special diet based on easily digestible light food. The feed should be divided into three to four smaller portions a day so that the digestive tract is not overloaded. In order for your four-legged friend to consume enough energy through food despite his illness, you should make sure that he consumes enough carbohydrates. However, these should be easy to digest. Get advice from your veterinarian. This can also tell you whether important vitamin and mineral substances such as vitamin B12, vitamin K or folic acid must be added to the dog food. Furthermore, a particularly low-fat diet is necessary. The fat content in dry feed should be reduced to about 10 to 15 percent, in wet feed to 2.5 to 4.5 percent. Also coordinate this with your veterinarian.

Make up for missing enzymes with proper nutrition

With inflammation of the pancreas, the digestive enzymes that the organ can no longer produce itself often have to be replaced artificially. There are, for example, preparations that are mixed with dog food in the form of powder. The product must "act" for 30 to 40 minutes before you can give it to your dog to eat. The food is pre-digested outside the body and can be used better. It is also important here that you consult your veterinarian.
