Flea & Tick Prevention for Puppies


Fleas and ticks can be more than just a nuisance. If you own a dog, there are many spot-on and pill preventatives available, but if you own a puppy, you may be limited in your choices.

Imidacloprid and Imidacloprid + Permethrin

Imidacloprid, the medication which you find in the brand name Advantage is safe for puppies older than 7 weeks. Imidacloprid and Permethrin is available as K9 Advantage. It is a spot-on treatment you apply every month. Imidacloprid will kill fleas, but not ticks. Imidacloprid & Permethrin will kill both fleas and ticks.

Fipronil and Fipronil + Methoprene

Fipronil is the ingredient in Frontline. Fipronil and Methoprene are the ingredients in Frontline Plus. These ingredients can be used on puppies older than 8 weeks. They are not safe for puppies younger than that age. Both are effective on fleas and ticks. They are a spot-on treatment you apply every month.

Selamectin

Selamectin, known by the brand name Revolution, kills fleas, several types of intestinal worms, mange mites and prevents heartworms. A true systemic, you apply it as a spot-on and it is absorbed through the skin and excreted through the sebaceous glands. You can use it on puppies 6 weeks and older.

Nitenpryram

Nitenpryram, which goes under the brand name Capstar, is a fast-acting, oral flea medication that is safe for puppies as young as 4 weeks old if they weigh more than 2 pounds. It only works on fleas and can start killing fleas seven minutes after it is administered. It is given once a day or once every other day, as recommended by your veterinarian.

Puppies Younger Than 4 Weeks

If you have puppies younger than 4 weeks old, or need tick control, consult your veterinarian for proper medications and dosages. Always follow the medication's directions and consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions concerning flea and tick control.
